Listen before you speak is easy to say or state. The art, the habit and the culture of listening seem to be some of the most underrated riches in the contemporary world of fast communication. Have you ever thought of cultivating your ability to listen to others profoundly, with patience and no judgement, and – daily? Have you ever thought about the fact that most of us stay in our bubble of the preferred way of communication? The picture below shows us the change of the generational attitudes toward aspiration in life, technology, a career, and signature products of different eras and corresponding communication media. To which generation do you belong? What is your preferred way of communication? How do you interact with people with unalike styles of communication than yours? As someone born on the border between Generation X and Y, I use emails most of the time. I need to have written communication to go back in the communication thread and verify what was said, agreed or disagreed. I usually have problems with people who only use telephonic communication with no written follow-up. With time I noticed that I do not listen well whilst on the phone. So I decided to give another chance to telephone calls and make notes after each conversation. This practice helped me expand how I communicate, especially in the professional environment.
